Chinese automaker Chery has introduced a new RAV4-sized SUV called the Omoda X. Unveiled as a concept during the Chery Group’s International User Summit in Wuhu, China, the compact SUV features rugged styling and will be available in fully electric and plug-in hybrid forms. The standout feature is an infrared thermal imaging night vision system, a first for a Chery product, which can identify wildlife and pedestrians up to 90 meters or 295 feet away in low-light conditions.

It remains unclear if this technology will be standard equipment on the production model. The Omoda X measures 4,650 mm or 183.1 inches long, positioning it directly against competitors like the Toyota RAV4, the Subaru Forester, the Honda CR-V, and the Mazda CX-5. It features angular styling inspired by Japanese mecha culture, futuristic 19-inch three-spoke alloy wheels, jagged LED lighting graphics, squared-off wheel arches, all-terrain tires, aluminum-style skid plates, and roof rails.

The vehicle offers a ground clearance of 200 mm or 7.9 inches, a wading depth of over 700 mm or 27.6 inches, and a towing capacity of 1,800 kg or 3,968 lbs. Inside, the Mecha Command Cockpit features an X-shaped floating center console, an aircraft-inspired layout, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13.2-inch infotainment display, physical climate controls, and 39 storage compartments. Chery confirmed the Omoda X will offer fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive options, alongside an X-Mode system for adjusting vehicle settings. The model is expected to be offered in export markets below the Omoda 9.
