BMW has confirmed two China-exclusive variants of its X5 and iX5 SUVs, both featuring a stretched wheelbase and tailored tech for the local market. The new Long Wheelbase models debut a 130mm longer wheelbase than global X5/iX5 versions, stretching the wheelbase to 3,165mm and boosting rear legroom for a more spacious cabin. The extended wheelbase also sharpens the SUV’s side profile, adding elegance and presence. Front-end redesigns and distinctive lighting—including swappable diagonal or double-X light icons—further differentiate the Chinese-market models. The interior adopts a monochromatic, streamlined design with slate and glass accents, integrating the Neue Klasse’s three-dimensional backlit accent strip and ambient lighting. A new BMW Panoramic iDrive display pairs with a free-cut Central Display and optional BMW Passenger Screen, while the BMW Theatre Screen delivers 8K streaming and gaming for rear-seat passengers, plus video calls for mobile working. Both models ride on adaptive two-axle air suspension as standard, ensuring a plush ride. The combustion-engine BMW X5 and all-electric BMW iX5 Long Wheelbase variants will launch in China in early 2027, with the iX5 Long Wheelbase promising up to 1,000 km range (CLTC) thanks to sixth-generation BMW eDrive tech and a high-voltage battery setup. BMW’s new intelligent driver-assistance system, developed with Chinese AI specialist Momenta, introduces navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driving assistance, combining decades of safety expertise with locally trained end-to-end AI. The system integrates with the “Heart of Joy” central computer for a cohesive automated-driving experience.
