Michelin has spotlighted its specialty tire division—an often-overlooked but strategically vital engine of growth and innovation for the Group. These high-tech tires are engineered for extreme environments where failure isn’t an option: mines, air transport, agriculture, defense, logistics, construction, and motorsport. Each sector demands uncompromising performance under brutal conditions—whether ensuring a safe aircraft touchdown, keeping a mine running 24/7, or delivering peak performance from agricultural machinery in any weather. Specialty tires aren’t just components; they’re concentrations of technology, designed to meet rigorous technical, climatic, and regulatory constraints. Their performance is mission-critical, making them strategic assets that underpin global economic activity. The specialty tire segment now accounts for 17% of Michelin’s total revenue, delivered a 13.1% operating margin in 2025, and grew volume by +2.5% in Q1 2026—making it the Group’s most profitable tire activity. Positioned in structurally growing sectors such as air transport, logistics, and defense—with compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) between 3% and 8% per year—specialty tires are on track for continued expansion in both value and volume. Growth is fueled by increased R&D investment, 90% of which is conducted in France, particularly in Clermont-Ferrand. Michelin is also scaling up aircraft tire production at its Bourges plant and rolling out patented, state-of-the-art industrial processes across its Le Puy, Troyes, and Montceau-les-Mines facilities. The Group’s approach goes beyond selling tires: it delivers measurable improvements in environmental, economic, and human performance for clients. This is achieved through dedicated specialist teams, a portfolio of innovative tire-related services with strong digital integration, and long-term partnerships. Michelin’s integrated R&D ecosystem—comprising 6,000 researchers and deep expertise in materials science and data—provides a decisive edge. Motorsport serves as a high-octane innovation accelerator, pushing tire technology to absolute limits and feeding breakthroughs back into the broader business. The Group’s Almería Test Center (CEMA) in Spain is the beating heart of this strategy. Spread across 4,500 hectares and featuring 113 kilometers of test tracks, CEMA offers an unparalleled diversity of terrain and machinery, supported by in-house measurement systems developed by Clermont-Ferrand engineers. The center’s rigorous testing protocols and vast data collection capabilities make it a living laboratory and cornerstone of Michelin’s innovation engine.
