Tesla Inc. announced that it will scale back production of its polarizing Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027, freeing capacity for increased output of the two‑seat Cybercab. The move follows a year of lower than expected demand: Elon Musk had projected that the Cybertruck could reach more than 250,000 units per year, but first‑year sales were less than one‑sixth of that figure. The Cybercab, a gold‑colored autonomous vehicle designed for Tesla’s Robotaxi service, began production at the Austin plant this year and is becoming a higher priority for the company’s shift toward AI and robotaxi solutions. It remains unclear whether Cybertruck production will be transferred to another factory or phased out entirely. Tesla’s Cybertruck, unveiled in 2019, has divided opinion; Musk called it the company’s best product ever and cited demand‑dependent production targets, yet the vehicle has struggled to sustain demand and has faced multiple recalls since production began in 2023.
