A 2021 Ford F-150 XLT owner recently shared an account of a minor cracked LED headlight that resulted in a staggering $2,300 dealer replacement quote due to moisture intrusion and an electrical short. According to the owner’s online discussion post, moisture entered the cracked assembly and caused a short circuit. Ford’s 2021 F-150 owner’s manual states that LED lamps are not serviceable and instructs owners to visit an authorized dealer in the event of a failure.
The dealer’s estimated $2,300 quote was not a documented paid bill, but the owner recalled that the new assembly alone would cost roughly $1,400. Publicly available OEM parts catalogs for a 2021 F-150 XLT list non-Tremor, non-adaptive fixed-DSS LED assemblies separately by side, displaying MSRPs of $1,813.87 for the left assembly (part number NL3Z-13008-G) and $1,675.85 for the right assembly (part number NL3Z-13008-H). A separate lighting control module is also listed in catalogs—such as part number JX7Z-13C788-N for certain non-adaptive applications with a build-date limit—though a module alone does not guarantee a fix for a cracked housing and shorted LED strip.
Seeking a cheaper alternative, a collision shop reportedly installed a leftover Tremor headlight assembly for $600. However, this lower-priced fix did not fully restore all functions: while the headlamps and high beams worked normally, the daytime running light (DRL) strip remained completely inoperative.
Ford’s 2021 warranty guide covers qualifying manufacturing defects in factory-supplied materials or workmanship for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, but explicitly excludes damage caused by accidents, collisions, or striking objects. Additionally, Ford Protect national contracts address LED assembly electrical failures through Interior/Exterior Lighting provisions, but typically exclude physical damage, foreign-object damage, road hazards, and normal lamp assembly fogging or moisture. The owner’s manual also notes that factory headlamps feature vents for normal air pressure changes, distinguishing acceptable fine mist from problematic water puddles, streaks, or large droplets requiring professional inspection.
