The 2024 Triumph Speed 400 is the first single-cylinder street motorcycle from Triumph since the brand’s revival in the 1980s. Serving as the junior member of the Speed lineup below the Speed Twin 900 and 1200, it borrows its single shock and sporty character from the Speed Triple. Built to welcome newer riders while offering plenty of excitement for veterans, it carries an MSRP of $4995.

At the heart of the bike is an all-new 398cc TR-series single. Developed in Hinckley with engineering partner Bajaj Auto, this DOHC, liquid-cooled, short-stroke engine features a Bosch ride-by-wire EFI system, a 12.1:1 compression ratio, and a bore and stroke of 89.0 x 64.0mm. It puts out 40 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 28 ft-lbs of torque at 6500 rpm, delivering power smoothly across the rev range. The bike is freeway-capable and handles fast traffic easily, though vibrations become noticeable in the mirrors and contact points above 70 mph. A 6-speed transmission is paired with a cable-actuated assist-and-slipper wet multiplate clutch, featuring a light pull and good feel, while final drive is handled by an X-ring chain.

With ample low-rpm torque, a narrow waist, and tucked-in bar-end mirrors, the Speed 400 shines as an urban commuter. Its chassis consists of a tubular steel frame with an aluminum cradle, a cast-aluminum swingarm, and a bolt-on subframe. Suspension duties are handled by a non-adjustable 43mm Showa Big Piston inverted fork up front with 5.5 inches of travel, and a spring-preload-adjustable piggyback-reservoir shock in the rear with 5.1 inches of travel. The setup successfully bridges urban comfort and sport riding, delivering light steering stability at speed.

Ten-spoke 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels (17 x 3 inches front, 17 x 4 inches rear) come wrapped in Metzeler Sportec M9RR tires measuring 110/70 x 17 front and 150/60 x 17 rear. Stopping power comes from a radially mounted four-piston caliper clamping a 300mm front disc, and a floating caliper gripping a 230mm rear disc, with strong initial bite absent and Bosch dual-channel ABS and switchable traction control coming standard.
Ergonomics are neutral and nearly upright, anchored by a 31.1-inch seat height and a 375-pound curb weight. Dimensions include a 54.2-inch wheelbase, 24.6-degree rake, and 4 inches of trail, with a 3.4-gallon fuel capacity. Tech and styling details feature an analog-style speedometer paired with an LCD inset, all-LED lighting, and a USB-C charging outlet. Available in Carnival Red, Caspian Blue, and Phantom Black, the Speed 400 offers classic styling and a premium finish that punch well above its price tag.
