The eighth generation of the BMW 3-series, codenamed ‘G50’, marks a significant reset for the brand, both aesthetically and in terms of engineering.

The new 3-series features a modern and clean design, with a front end dominated by the headlamps that meet in the middle and double as the kidney grilles.

The M350 model, with its mild-hybridised 3-litre twin-turbo six engine, delivers 443bhp and is a fraction bigger and heavier than its predecessor.

Despite its size, the M350 handles well, with a supple and quiet ride, and a steering that improves with speed.

The car feels poised and comfortable on fast, flowing roads, and its chassis balance works well on twistier roads.

The interior features a radical new design, with a square-ish steering wheel and a massive 17.9in lozenge-shaped screen. The Panoramic iDrive system takes some getting used to, but works well once familiar.

The M350 is priced from £66,785, putting it in the same ballpark as the Audi S5 saloon, and is expected to be followed by a PHEV version next year.
