Future Renault models are set to adopt a more restrained design approach with increased commonality across the lineup, according to Renault Group design chief Laurens van den Acker. The French manufacturer recently rolled out a series of retro EVs, including the 4, 5, and Twingo, each featuring distinct, highly individual styling. Meanwhile, the brand has maintained modern designs for its internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, such as the new Clio. Van den Acker indicated that this split approach will continue, though he hinted at a shift toward greater uniformity under new group CEO François Provost, outside of the brand’s retro icons.

Renault plans to keep its legendary icon and future icon product ranges separate. Van den Acker explained that the goal of the legendary icons is to prioritize recognition above all else, noting that models like the Twingo and R5 feature the Renault logo but distinct form languages and layouts. Alexandre Malval joined earlier this year to head design for the Renault brand, and van den Acker noted that the team will regroup slightly around the future icons to establish a more unified design language. Describing the pendulum swing in design strategy from past uniform portfolios to recent unique individual identities under Luca de Meo, van den Acker suggested the brand is now looking to find a solid balance.

Van den Acker pointed to the new E-Space concept as an example of this evolving strategy, which draws inspiration from the original Espace MPV while introducing a fresh styling approach. The transition to bespoke EV platforms means future models will feature different default silhouettes, including longer wheelbases, larger wheels, short overhangs, and heights sitting between traditional SUVs and saloons. While Renault feels confident in the B-segment, the design challenge lies in the C- and D-segments. Van den Acker emphasized that with Alexandre Malval’s arrival, the form language will become more restrained, focusing on timelessness, seriousness, and solidity as prices increase, while maintaining a distinct Latin identity that sits between German coldness and Italian flair.
