The fastest military aircraft ever built are a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of engineers who pushed the boundaries of speed and physics.
The North American X-15, an experimental fighter jet, holds the top spot with a mind-boggling top speed of Mach 6.72, or 4,520 mph.

Powered by an XLR-99 Pioneer rocket motor, it reached altitudes of 354,200 feet and was flown by 12 pilots, including Neil Armstrong.
The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, with a top speed of Mach 3.3, or around 2,500 mph, is another iconic aircraft that still holds the record for the fastest-ever jet-powered military aircraft.
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 ‘Foxbat’, a Soviet interceptor, had an operational top speed of Mach 2.83 and could reach Mach 3.2, but at the risk of damaging its engines.

The XB-70 Valkyrie, a high-altitude strategic bomber, had a maximum speed of Mach 3.1, or 2,056 mph.
These aircraft, developed during the Cold War era, prioritized sheer pace over other considerations and were capable of cracking Mach 3, with some even exceeding that.

They come from a time of technological ambition, each with a fascinating story behind its creation and purpose.
