The BMW iX3 has been awarded the highest five-star safety rating in its first Euro NCAP assessment under the organisation’s newly revised, more stringent 2026 test protocols. The updated Euro NCAP procedure evaluates vehicles across four comprehensive safety stages: Safe Driving, Crash Avoidance, Crash Protection, and Post Crash Safety, with a stronger emphasis on real-world driving scenarios and elevated requirements. The BMW iX3, as the first Neue Klasse model tested, excelled in every category, surpassing the minimum thresholds for a five-star rating by a significant margin. The brand’s holistic safety strategy—covering crash prevention, occupant protection, and post-crash assistance—aligned perfectly with the new assessment framework. Euro NCAP highlighted the iX3’s standard-fit driver assistance systems, which contributed to a 73% score in Safe Driving, 13 percentage points above the five-star requirement. Key systems praised included the Speed Limit Info display, which accurately identified speed limits on 97% of a 2,000-kilometre cross-border test route through Italy, France, Germany, and Austria, as well as the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and intuitive physical controls. In Crash Avoidance, the iX3 achieved 83%, with its active safety suite—including Front Collision Warning with automatic braking—earning top marks. The exit warning system, which alerts occupants to cyclists approaching from behind when exiting the vehicle, was also commended for preventing door-related injuries. Crash Protection saw the iX3 score 86%, with Euro NCAP awarding maximum points for child occupant protection in an asymmetric frontal collision. The model also delivered top-tier results in side-impact tests, aided by the standard central airbag that prevents front-seat occupants from colliding. The Post Crash Safety category yielded an outstanding 95%, reflecting the iX3’s robust emergency response features, such as automatic crash notification, high-voltage battery safety measures, and accessible exit routes for occupants and first responders. A critical highlight was the reliability of the iX3’s flush-mounted, electrically operated door handles, which functioned correctly even after all crash tests, thanks to a mechanical redundancy system that ensures operation even if electrical systems fail.
