The new Ford Universal EV platform, designed to help the company reduce costs, was engineered with right-hand drive markets in mind. The platform, which will be used in a mid-size pickup due to arrive in 2027, is capable of right-hand drive, but Ford has not shared specifics on where and when it will be exported. The company plans to export vehicles using the UEV platform to select global markets outside of the U.S. and is looking to combat the growing competition from Chinese EVs, which are already available in certain right-hand drive markets like Australia and the UK. According to Andrew Frick, president of Ford Blue and Model e, the UEV platform is a key part of the company’s strategy to stay competitive, but it’s not the only factor. The platform’s development is focused on reducing complexity and sourcing, and the learnings from this process will be shared and scaled across all of Ford’s vehicles.
