Car repairs can be a significant financial burden, especially for those living paycheck to paycheck.
A recent survey by the Federal Reserve found that 37% of Americans wouldn’t or couldn’t pay $400 in cash for an emergency expense. However, there are organizations that can help people with low incomes with expensive car repairs.

For example, Lift Garage in Minnesota offers repairs at a steep discount, with a $25 per hour labor rate and a 7.5% markup on parts. To qualify, a customer’s household income must be less than 150% of the federal poverty guidelines.
Working Wheels in North Carolina provides repairs for 10% of the normal cost, with an out-of-pocket cost capped at $100.
Second Chances Garage in Maryland fixes vehicles at about half the price it would cost at other shops in the area.

The State of Arizona will help pay to fix a car to pass emissions testing, and some United Way chapters will help pay for car repairs in general.

These organizations can make a significant difference in people’s lives, with 83% of Working Wheels’ participants reporting increased household income and 100% saying their quality of life has improved.
