Cylinder scoring risk on Lancer X: what to check

“Scoring” in owner talk means cylinder-wall or ring damage: rising oil use, weak compression, vibration or knock. Not every aged Lancer X has it — risk rises with neglected oil changes, overheating, and low-oil driving.

Red flags

  • Rising oil use without external leaks.
  • Blue smoke when hot under throttle.
  • Misfires that survive plugs and coils.
  • Uneven compression across cylinders.
  • Metal on the drain plug or in the filter.

Inspection order before you pay

  1. Service and overheat history.
  2. Smoke and leaks on a warm test drive.
  3. Compression or leak-down on a warm engine.
  4. Bore scope through the spark-plug holes.
  5. Oil analysis if the deal allows a short evaluation period.

An honest engine with documented mild consumption often beats a no-paperwork “full rebuild” ad. Budget for machine work, parts, and fluids before you gamble. After purchase: no cold high-rpm runs, keep oil topped, fix overheating immediately — skip miracle anti-smoke additives as a strategy.
