A Chevy Silverado EV owner towed a 34-foot Grand Design camper 1,216 miles to Hilton Head, South Carolina, using $592.47 worth of fast charging, which is about $18 less than a gas truck would have spent on fuel. However, the owner forgot his portable charger at home and had to pay $59 for a local top-up, erasing the savings. The trip highlights the costs of long-distance towing with an electric vehicle, particularly when relying on public fast charging. The owner’s experience shows that while electric trucks can be cost-effective for daily driving, long trips on fast chargers can be expensive. The Silverado EV used 1,227.4 kWh of electricity over the trip, with a cost of about 48 cents per kWh. In comparison, a gas truck would have spent about $611, and a diesel truck would have spent about $640. The owner credits Super Cruise, a hands-free driving system, for reducing fatigue during the trip. The experience highlights the importance of planning and preparation when towing with an electric vehicle, particularly when it comes to charging.
