Ford Already Recalled 11.2 Million Cars in 2026 — And It’s Not Done Yet

Ford Motor Company has already shattered its own recall record for a single year, with 50 recalls affecting 11,271,100 vehicles in 2026 alone. That figure includes one recall for 2,633 engine block heaters.

The tally already surpasses the automaker’s total for all of 2025, and the pace shows no sign of slowing. The largest recall so far involves 4.4 million trucks—including the F-Series pickup, Ford’s best-seller—due to a software glitch that can disable brakes and trailer indicators, to be fixed via an over-the-air update.

Ford’s recall spree isn’t new: in 2025, the company issued 153 recalls affecting nearly 13 million vehicles, more than double the previous record held by General Motors. The surge in recalls has drawn regulatory scrutiny, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) fining Ford in late 2024 for failing to meet federal recall requirements.

Under a three-year consent order, Ford agreed to overhaul its recall process and meet quarterly with NHTSA. The company attributes the increase to a deliberate strategy to aggressively identify and fix hardware and software issues, backed by doubling its safety and technical teams and expanding testing of critical systems like powertrains.

Among the 51 recalls issued so far in 2026, key issues include rear suspension toe link fractures in older Ford Explorers, high-voltage battery fire risks in the 2026 Ford E-Transit, and rearview camera malfunctions across multiple models. Other recalls target windshield wiper failures, unintended brake light illumination, improperly secured seat belt anchors, and even a recall for incorrectly installed piston circlips in the 2026 Ford Explorer and Mustang.

Ford’s recall list spans everything from engine block heaters that may short-circuit and cause fires to driveshaft separation risks in the F-Series Super Duty. The company’s proactive stance reflects a broader industry trend toward rapid software and hardware remediation, but the sheer volume of affected vehicles underscores the scale of the challenge.
