Ford sells part of Valencia plant to Geely for EV production

Ford has officially finalized a deal to sell a portion of its Valencia Assembly plant in Spain to Chinese automaker Geely. The transaction will see Geely take over part of an assembly line that has been idle since Ford discontinued the Mondeo, S-Max, and Galaxy models in 2022.

Geely plans to repurpose the facility to produce electric vehicles for the European market, aiming to avoid import tariffs. The move also provides Ford with much-needed relief, as the company’s European market share has declined sharply, leaving it with excess production capacity at Valencia and other plants.

Currently, Ford continues to build the Kuga at the Spanish facility, and this production is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. However, the future of a previously planned plug-in hybrid variant of the Ford Bronco for Europe remains uncertain following the deal.

That model, which was expected to use a plug-in hybrid powertrain, reportedly shared no commonality with the U.S.-sold Bronco or Bronco Sport and was described as smaller than the Kuga.
