Poll: Does the S650 Ford Mustang Need Another High-Performance Variant?

The S650 Ford Mustang lineup is already a deep bench of performance machines, stretching from the turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost I4 at 315 horsepower all the way up to the supercharged 5.2L Legend V8 in the GTD at 815 horsepower. The latest additions include the track-focused Mustang Dark Horse SC, which slots in with a supercharged 5.2L Legend V8 pumping out 795 horsepower, offering GTD-level performance without the exclusivity or the $108,485 starting price of the GTD.

That leaves the Dark Horse at 500 horsepower and the Dark Horse SC at 795 horsepower, creating a noticeable gap that a potential 650-horsepower variant could fill. The obvious route to 650 horsepower would be a factory supercharger on the 5.0L Coyote V8, a setup already available as an aftermarket accessory.

Ford has trademarked “Dark Horse Boss,” hinting that a new sub-brand could be in play, though CEO Jim Farley has ruled out reviving “Cobra” or “Boss” as model names. Pricing for a 650-horsepower Mustang would likely land in the mid-$80,000 range, sitting between the Dark Horse’s $64,080 starting price and the Dark Horse SC’s $108,485 entry point.
