US Lawmakers Push For A Permanent Ban On Chinese Cars

Dozens of American lawmakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties are pushing for a permanent ban on Chinese vehicles in the US. The bipartisan initiative, led by Republican Senator Bernie Moreno and Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin, already has 100 co-sponsors, with lawmakers aiming to win Senate approval for the bill this week.

The push coincides with a three-day visit to the US by China’s President Xi Jinping. American automakers including Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis have lobbied for stricter policies to keep Chinese vehicles out of the country.

This legislative effort comes in the wake of former President Joe Biden signing legislation in January 2025 to prohibit the sale of vehicles using Chinese hardware and software systems, with software bans starting from the 2027 model year and hardware bans from the 2030 model year. While that rule has largely blocked Chinese companies, the Trump administration recently issued a waiver to Volvo, allowing the Chinese-owned Swedish brand to continue sales in the US.

The new legislation proposed by Moreno and Slotkin seeks to strip the administration of its power to issue such waivers. Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin stated at a press conference that no one wants Chinese cars in America, warning that allowing Chinese companies to build cars locally would spell the beginning of the end for US auto manufacturing.

In contrast, President Donald Trump recently stated in an interview with Fox News that he would be fine with Chinese brands selling cars locally as long as they are manufactured in the US, expressing openness to Chinese companies opening plants to build vehicles stateside.
