Mack Trucks has launched two new highway tractors—Pioneer and a redesigned Anthem—to replace its single-model strategy with a clearer division between longhaul and regional duties. The Pioneer targets over-the-road operations, while the new Anthem is optimized for regional and urban applications while remaining highway-capable. Both share a common cab platform with day cab, 44-inch, and 64-inch sleeper options, but the Pioneer is the only model offering a 76-inch sleeper in mid-roof and high-roof configurations, along with Mack’s integrated electric parking cooler. The redesign emphasizes driver comfort, safety, fuel efficiency, and uptime, with fuel economy improvements of up to 11% for the Pioneer and 10% for the new Anthem over the legacy Anthem. The cab is 9 inches wider than the previous generation, enhancing shoulder room and sleeper space, while a redesigned suspension and the new “Max Ride” system improve ride comfort on rough roads. Mack also introduced Mack Protect, an in-house collision-mitigation platform with forward-facing radar, cameras, driver alerts, a heads-up display, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot coverage. The system is offered in three tiers: standard (forward-collision mitigation and frontal airbags), Pro (adds side protection and blind-spot coverage), and Premier (includes lane-keep assist with torque-assisted steering). The Pioneer features a factory-installed electric auxiliary power unit (APU) as a proprietary alternative to aftermarket systems, streamlining maintenance and reducing downtime. Senior Highway Product Manager Blake Routh highlighted the trucks’ focus on driver comfort and efficiency, stating, “We feel very confident that we have the most comfortable truck,” with improvements in sleeper comfort, driver environment, and ride quality. The strategy marks a shift from Mack’s reliance on a single do-it-all Anthem to a more defined lineup tailored to specific operational needs.
