Geely’s Smart Charger Can Charge An EV Quicker Than A Bathroom Break

Geely Auto Group has fired back at rival BYD by unveiling its new Geely Smart Charging technology, featuring peak charging speeds of up to 2,250 kW. The system combines an advanced AI model co-developed by Geely and StepFun with the fifth-generation Geely Smart Charging Station.

According to Geely, testing with a Lynk & Co 01 and a Zeekr 001 demonstrated a 10-70% charge in just four minutes and 30 seconds, and a 10-97% charge in eight minutes and 40 seconds. This performance eclipses BYD’s Flash Charging 1,500 kW system, which claims a 10-70% top-up in five minutes and a 10-97% charge in nine minutes.

Pumping energy at such an extraordinary pace requires sophisticated temperature management, handled by Geely’s in-house AI technology. The system uses advanced algorithms to anticipate battery temperatures ahead of time and instantly adjust charging speeds, aiming to keep temperatures steady below 55°C (131°F).

Furthermore, Geely presented its latest-generation Ultra Short Blade Battery, which cuts charging temperatures by 10 percent. While Geely has surpassed BYD in outright power, BYD holds a significant deployment advantage, having already installed more than 10,000 stations across China in the six months since its tech was revealed, with plans to reach 20,000 domestic stations by the end of the year and 6,000 international stations across Europe, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Africa, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand by April next year.
