General Motors has been promoting its American heritage, stating it employs the most people of any automaker in the US and contributes nearly $50 billion to the nation’s GDP. However, a recent study from Cars.com reveals that GM doesn’t even crack the top 20 in terms of the most American-made cars, with its most American-made model ranking 25th overall.
The study found that the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y top the list, followed by the Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Honda Ridgeline. GM builds just 13 of the 86 most-American cars on local shores, while Ford builds more cars in the US, with 83 percent of new Fords assembled in the US being sold there too.
The company’s senior vice president of global manufacturing, Mike Trevorrow, highlighted GM’s contributions to the US economy, including $9 billion poured into local manufacturing and facilities this year. However, the study’s findings suggest that neither GM nor Ford ranks particularly high among the most American-made cars on sale, with foreign brands such as Honda, Toyota, and Kia building cars on American soil and ranking higher in the list.

GM’s most American-made model ranks behind the Lexus TX, Honda Accord, Acura MDX, Toyota Camry, Acura RDX, Kia EV9, and Toyota Tundra, while the most American-made Ford vehicle is the Navigator, ranking 11th. The study’s results raise questions about the authenticity of GM’s patriotic claims, given its reliance on imported parts and lower ranking in the list of most American-made cars.
