Transport Canada has received nearly 380,000 responses to its national headlight glare survey in just six weeks—a record volume that will take months to analyze. The survey, conducted between March 6 and April 20, sought public feedback on how headlight glare affects nighttime driving, contributing factors, driver behavior, and potential solutions. The surge in participation reflects growing frustration among Canadian motorists over increasingly bright headlights, driven by advanced LED and laser technologies that improve visibility but also create blinding glare for oncoming drivers. The issue has gained political traction, with Vancouver City Councilor Sean Orr and Victoria’s city council filing motions to address headlight regulations. Meanwhile, a petition by Bloc Québécois MP Xavier Barsalou-Duval, open since February 17 and running until June 17, has garnered 11,659 signatures urging the federal government to update headlight safety standards. Despite public concern, crash data from the US suggests glare plays a minimal role in nighttime accidents, with glare cited in just 1 or 2 out of every 1,000 nighttime crashes between 2015 and 2023. Transport Canada has not specified when its findings will be released but confirmed the analysis will take several months due to the unprecedented response volume.
