Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.Era 8X, a new range-extender SUV that’s set to launch exclusively in China—despite its potential appeal in overseas markets.

The ID.Era 8X shares its design language with the larger ID.Era 9X, featuring a modern look with a gloss black grille, black fenders, and black wing mirrors.

The front fascia is dominated by an LED light bar and vertically positioned headlight clusters, while the rear mirrors the 9X with a similar LED light bar and illuminated VW badge.

The ID.Era 8X will be offered in four distinct variants, all powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine serving as a range extender.

The base model pairs this engine with a 51.1 kWh battery and an electric motor, delivering a combined 295 HP (220 kW) and an EV-only range of 162 miles (260 km). A lighter version of this setup extends the electric range to 171 miles (275 km).

Two additional variants feature a larger 65.2 kWh battery, offering EV-only ranges of 205 miles (330 km) and 214 miles (345 km), respectively.

The SUV’s curb weight ranges from 5,478 lbs (2,485 kg) to 5,709 lbs (2,590 kg), depending on the configuration.
