BMW Turns iX3 Owners Into Real-World Safety Testers, If They Opt In

BMW has launched a video-data program that turns participating iX3 owners into real-world safety testers. Since April 2026, new BMW iX3 models on the Neue Klasse platform record event-based video of safety-relevant driving moments, such as hard braking or near-miss incidents, which are then processed with machine-learning models to improve driver-assistance software. The program aims to train driver-assistance software on real near-miss events instead of relying only on simulations. Owners must opt in to the program, which complies with applicable data-protection rules. The captured clips are capped at 120 seconds of unedited video, combining exterior camera footage with data from the car’s exterior sensors. Privacy safeguards apply, including blurring of faces and license plates, and deletion of vehicle identification numbers after a short period. The program will help BMW to improve its driver-assistance software and provide faster over-the-air fixes for recurring issues. However, authorities will test whether anonymization and consent practices meet the rules, and if they don’t, expect tighter limits on data collection.
