Caltrans Unveils ‘Games Route Network’ Project to Convert Existing Lanes into Permit-Only Lanes for 2028 Olympics

With the 2028 Olympic Games fast approaching, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has announced a major improvement project to ensure smooth transportation for athletes, staff, and organizers. The ‘Games Route Network’ (GRN) project will convert nearly 360 miles of existing lanes into permit-only lanes, enforced by cameras and smart technology. The project aims to alleviate congestion and facilitate the movement of VIPs across Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. The improvements will include new pavement striping, traffic signs, traffic signal upgrades, electrical infrastructure upgrades, smart cameras, CCTV systems, and ATM gantries. The GRN will span across multiple freeways and highways, including state routes 1, 2, 37, 91, and 164, as well as the 5, 10, 101, 105, 110, 134, 210, and 405 freeways. The lanes will be painted blue and marked with ‘LA28’ labels, and violators will face fines of up to $300.
