Aurora Advances Third-Generation Autonomous Truck Hardware

Aurora Innovation has announced advancements in its third-generation autonomous truck hardware, just a week after launching its second-generation system. The company is targeting production with its partner Aumovio in the second half of 2027. Aurora’s third-generation hardware is expected to have decreased costs and will be integrated with Paccar’s future autonomy-enabled platform. The company has already begun reliability testing for the new hardware components. Aurora’s CEO, Chris Urmson, stated that the hardware timeline fits with Paccar’s ambitions in the autonomous space. The company has partnerships with Paccar and Volvo Autonomous Solutions for factory-installed self-driving trucks. Aurora’s quarterly revenue doubled to $2 million, but its losses widened to $270 million in the second quarter of 2026. The company expects to have a couple of hundred trucks operating by the end of the year and plans to offer trucks for sale to customers in 2027. Several customers, including Hirschbach Motor Lines and McLane, have already rolled out driverless operations using Aurora’s technology.
