A semi driver hauling a heavy load on I-55 in Illinois narrowly avoided a catastrophic rear-end collision with a Hyundai Sonata driver who almost came to a complete stop due to confusion over lane markings. The incident, which occurred on May 10, 2026, was captured on dashcam footage shared by the semi driver, /u/Cezar__2, on the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit.
The Hyundai driver, who was traveling southbound on I-55, mistakenly assumed their lane was ending and attempted to change lanes, but instead almost came to a complete stop. The semi driver had to emergency brake and swerve into the middle lane to avoid the collision, causing other drivers to move into the emergency shoulder.
The Hyundai driver eventually realized their lane was not ending and continued driving, seemingly oblivious to the close call. The incident highlights the potential dangers of confusing road markings and the importance of proper lane usage.

In Illinois, improper lane usage can result in fines of $120-$250 and traffic violation points, while reckless driving can lead to more serious consequences. The incident has sparked discussion on the need for clearer road markings to prevent similar incidents in the future.
