While that total represents a year-over-year decline, it still outpaces Tesla’s expected quarterly sales of around 396,500 vehicles, which the company will report next week. Analysts compiled by Bloomberg project BYD’s lead will be enough to reclaim the EV sales crown.

BYD first overtook Tesla in pure EV sales in the fourth quarter of 2024, maintaining a significant lead through 2025.

Analysts cite Tesla’s political controversies and its founder’s close ties with US President Donald Trump as factors that alienated consumers, particularly in Europe.

The Chinese automaker’s push into international markets, including strong sales of its Dolphin model, has further strengthened its position. Tesla’s market share in China has also declined as domestic competitors gain ground.
