Ford’s all-new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform has been under development for years as a low-cost foundation for future electric models, starting with a mid-size pickup scheduled to debut later this year and enter production at Louisville Assembly in 2027. The core goal is to slash EV costs and prices to better compete with Chinese electric vehicles. However, Ford Blue and Model e president Andrew Frick told Automotive News that the UEV platform may not be sufficient on its own. “I don’t know if it would be enough, but it’s not in a bubble,” Frick said, emphasizing that the learnings and innovations from UEV—such as simplified sourcing and reduced complexity—are now being applied across Ford’s entire vehicle lineup. “The importance of what we’re doing with our UEV platform going into Louisville and the innovation behind it… those are things that are now being shared and scaled across all of our vehicles.

There’s a lot of learnings. It’s not just staying in Long Beach.” Frick stressed the urgency of the effort, citing the rapid global expansion of Chinese-sourced or Chinese-branded EVs in markets like Mexico, Australia, and Thailand. “You can see what they’re doing in a lot of markets around the world… The percentage of industry that’s either Chinese-sourced or Chinese OEM-based is growing at a really rapid pace.

We’re very aware of it, we’re competing with them every day. We have a really good line of sight in terms of their cost structure, where their advantages would be, and that’s what we’re now deploying across our entire industrial team.” Prototypes of Ford’s new UEV-based pickup are expected to begin road testing within weeks. The model is designed to appeal beyond traditional truck buyers, with Frick suggesting it could attract SUV shoppers due to its cargo space comparable to the Toyota RAV4.
Despite its low starting price target of $30,000, the pickup is also expected to deliver strong driving dynamics and a well-equipped feature set.
