A nighttime traffic stop in Washington State turned into one of the year’s slowest pursuits, ending with a PIT maneuver and a sovereign citizen claim. Police initiated a stop after spotting a car, reportedly a Hyundai Accent, without headlights at night. The driver repeatedly pulled over before continuing down the road, prompting officers to end the pursuit with a PIT maneuver and make an arrest. The female driver claimed to be a ‘sovereign citizen’, arguing that she was not subject to government laws or law enforcement authority. However, this excuse carried no weight with the officers, with Interim Chief Jeff Salstrom stating ‘She was wrong’. The officers’ calm radio communications and training on emergency vehicle operations paid off, despite the pursuit unfolding at a slow pace of around 25 mph. The incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with individuals who reject their authority.
