Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems and Aeva have announced a partnership to develop an active safety system for Class 8 trucks, integrating Aeva’s 4D lidar sensors and perception software with Bendix’s collision mitigation technology. The program targets future mass-production vehicles and aims to bring lidar-based Level 2 and higher driver assistance systems to commercial fleets at scale. The collaboration is positioned as part of a broader shift in lidar technology use, moving beyond high-level autonomy applications into systems designed to enhance active safety performance. Bendix’s flagship advanced driver assistance system, Bendix Fusion, is already deployed across most major Class 8 original equipment manufacturer platforms, providing a potential pathway for wider adoption of lidar-based sensing in production trucks. The North American Class 8 truck market sees approximately 300,000 new vehicles sold annually, offering a significant opportunity for the new system. Bendix’s chief technology officer, Mike Tober, emphasized the importance of advancing safety technologies for commercial fleets, while Aeva’s co-founder and CTO, Mina Rezk, highlighted the potential for scalable lidar deployment in commercial vehicles. The agreement was formalized on June 16, with the program’s focus on future mass-production vehicles.
