Van life is often romanticised by Instagram shots of sun-kissed vans parked in jaw-dropping landscapes, but the reality is far more nuanced.

Justin Hughes, who spent three full years living in his Ford Transit camper—Smokey Da Van—has seen both sides of the road.

He’s parked overnight in Walmart lots (when allowed), truck stops, highway rest areas, and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) long-term visitor areas, discovering that the scenery isn’t always postcard-perfect. Truck stops are noisy, rest areas are noisy, and desert sunsets are stunning but rare.

The myth that van life is inherently dangerous is overblown; Hughes never felt personally threatened, though he remains vigilant, parking in well-lit spots and keeping an escape route clear. He’s also debunked the “dirty van lifer” stereotype: most occupants aren’t living in filth.

While showers aren’t daily, sponge baths, wet wipes, dry shampoo, portable showers (even rigged in a Ford Transit with a tarp), gym memberships, and public restrooms keep hygiene manageable.

Toilets range from simple five-gallon buckets with snap-on seats to RV-style cassette or composting units.

The idea that van life is prohibitively expensive is another exaggeration; costs vary widely depending on setup and choices.

There’s no single right way to live on the road—some embrace minimalism, others prioritise comfort, and many blend both. The Instagram feed is just one slice of the story, not the whole picture.
